We’re sorry it sounded like we were accepting the notion that people’s tweets should be analysed; it’s more that we wanted to give people a feel for what happens when they are analysed. The OPF aims to empower people with the knowledge, backed by evidence, to enable them to make informed choices about how they use the internet. With our online experiments we are aiming to help non-expert audiences understand what the experts are up to, and expose at times the scientific invalidity of their methods – something which we felt our Twitter study contributes to. Our mantra is discover-discuss-decide. We hope to facilitate society’s decisions by discovering and discussing online privacy issues. For us it’s about empowering the individual by exposing the risks of online activities. If we are one-step ahead of the experts, then hopefully the debate is ahead of the risks. But unfortunately it’s more likely that we are one or more steps behind them; so discovering what’s going on could be a useful thing. But that’s just our view. Always happy to discuss and develop it.

You are supposed to be protecting our privacy, not invading it. I find this study extremely obnoxious and it sounds to me like you’re joining hands with those who would invade people’s privacy and accepting the notion that people’s tweets should be “analyzed” for personality traits. The idea that a filler word like “blah” could be interpreted as a sociopathic trait is insane. You have no business participating in this. You should have been protecting us from things like this being done.

i’m very disappointed to see you doing this and I won’t be supporting you in the future; I am going to support places that protect my privacy.
